In just two short years, Lemony Split has become a beloved staple in York, Nebraska. Founded by husband-and-wife team, Justin and Kaylen Rodrigues, who both work in education, Lemony Split is a seasonal business that operates during the warmer months, offering a unique twist on a classic treat—lemonade. But this isn’t your average lemonade stand. Lemony Split offers over 20 flavors and 2,500 flavor combinations, setting itself apart in a market that often sticks to the basics. Their creative approach and deep roots in the York community have made Lemony Split more than just a business; it’s becoming a staple in the town.

A Business Born from Inspiration and Faith

The inspiration for Lemony Split came from the couple’s hometown, where they noticed a gap in the market for refreshing summer treats. Torn between starting a lemonade stand or a snow cone business, they ultimately decided on lemonade, and it has been a decision they haven’t regretted. Operating for five months each year, from late spring into early fall, Lemony Split has been a blessing for the family and the community. The business reflects the couple’s faith-based values, which shine through in their commitment to giving back to York.

“We’re not just here to make a profit,” the owner shared. “It’s in our hearts to give back, and we do that through our business by treating people with kindness and creating something special for the community.”

The Popularity of Lemony Split

Among the wide array of drinks on the menu, two stand out as customer favorites. The Duke Power, a tropical concoction featuring blue curacao, coconut, and pineapple, transports customers to an island paradise with every sip. Then there’s The Black Mamba, a high-energy drink infused with Red Bull, which has become a hit with the many fans of the popular energy drink.

The Double-Edged Sword of Entrepreneurship

Like many small business owners, the Lemony Split team has found that the freedom of setting their own schedule is both a blessing and a curse. The ability to choose where and when to set up shop allows them to work around their family’s needs, but it also means they are solely responsible for the daily operations, from setup to cleanup.

“We’re lucky to have some amazing high school students from York who help us out,” the owner explained. “But at the end of the day, the responsibility falls on us. It’s a balancing act, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Growth and the Road Ahead

Looking to the future, Lemony Split has big plans. Currently, they operate one truck in York and have a mobile setup in Kearney, run by a family friend. The ultimate goal is to expand to four or five trucks across Nebraska. In the more immediate future, they plan to add a second truck next year and potentially establish something more stationary in York. This expansion would allow them to attend more events without missing out on their regular spots, like the local ballpark, where they are a weekend fixture.
